The New Hampshire Summer Math Circle is a challenging encounter with unusual mathematics, targeted at interested and motivated high school students. There will be no homework, quizzes, or grades. The emphasis is on mathematical exploration in a social context, through direct discovery and student-to-student collaboration. Sophisticated mathematical ideas will be explored in an accessible, highly interactive, collegial manner.
The program is sponsored by the New Hampshire Math Circle, and will be held at the University of New Hampshire – Manchester. The New Hampshire Math Circle is a non-profit organization dedicated to student mathematical enrichment, founded in 2019. The University of New Hampshire – Manchester was founded in 1985 and is a college of the University of New Hampshire.
This year represents the sixth annual running of the Summer Math Circle. We have served over 100 of New Hampshire’s top student mathematicians, some of whom have gone on to admission to top universities such as MIT, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, and Oxford, and strong performance in competitions such as AMC, AIME, ARML, and USAMO. However, the program is NOT geared towards test preparation or contest preparation. Instead, the focus is on inculcating an appreciation and passion for mathematics, and fostering the ability to communicate mathematical ideas, which contribute to long term success.

This year we will investigate a number of math topics not on the usual school curriculum, including: Rope Math, the Queen’s Game, Universal Words, Squares on a Grid, and 72 pencils. Each day of the Summer Math Circle will consist of 90 minutes of math, a break for lunch, games, and puzzles, and another 60 minutes of math. Participants should bring their own brown bag lunch. All participants will be given shirts, swag bag, and celebration luncheon on the final day.
