ARML 2024

On Sunday June 2 2024, 39 students from 24 schools from across New Hampshire gathered at Saint Anselm College for the American Regions Mathematics League competition. First established in 1976, ARML is one of the most prestigious high school math contests in the USA – attracting teams from all across the country and internationally. The New Hampshire turnout represents a 56% percent increase in participation over last year.

Normally, the contest is held at Penn State and three other regional centers. Due to the difficulty and expense of travel to Pennsylvania, we made the decision to hold our competition locally, with special arrangement from the national ARML organisers. Students were provided with 9 practice sessions by the New Hampshire Math Circle, conducted by Zoom, prior to the competition. Competition participants had a full day of challenging math. In addition, each participant was provided with a tee shirt, a catered lunch, ice cream, and commemorative pencil and eraser. The Math Circle awarded cash scholarship prizes to top finishers.

The increased participation allowed us to field two full teams of 15 and one partial team. Our top team garnered 108 points, placing us 25th out of 50 teams in our division, out-scoring arch rival Vermont with 90 points. Remarkably, our top student finished with a 9 out of 10 on the Individual Round. This places him in the 98th percentile nationally of this already highly selective group of student mathematicians.

We would like to thank our volunteers without whom the competiton would not be possible: Tom Morey of Bishop Brady HS, Vijay Patil, Minal Patil, Shiby Thomas, and Milind Mukewar.  We’d also like to thank the generous financial support of Reach Out For Schools and NHTM, which allowed the contest to run at essentially break-even.
